European and Australian tourists killed in Ethiopia

The foreign tourists were killed on Monday in a remote area near the border withEritrea, Ethiopian Television said, citing defense ministry.

The report added that some foreign tourists were injured and were rushed to hospital by government forces in the area, but did not mention the amount.

The tourists were in one group, and according to one source, some are still missing.

Afar Region, the area covered scrubland and desert with a series of salt lakes and volcanoes, known as one of the hottest places on earth. The place is also known for his discovery of hominid fossils.

A French tourist disappeared in the area in 2004 did not leave a single trace of anything but a backpack.

In 2007, a group of European nationals were kidnapped in the area, but later freed by the rebels who arrested them.

Ethiopia, who often accuse their enemies of Eritrea's neighbors helping rebels against the regime of Addis Abeba, accused Eritrea of ​​supporting the group since the kidnapping in 2007.

Ethiopia and Eritrea had fought in 1998 and 2000 because the seizure of the area and still frequent attacks on their border areas.
