Causes of Explosion in Lebanon

A big explosion shook Beirut Lebanon, Tuesday (4/8/2020) afternoon. The explosion occurred in the port area and devastated most of the city.

Like an atomic bomb, an explosion starts with a loud explosion that causes a huge puff of smoke. Very large flashes of fire were also seen.

Witnesses said the explosion was heard in almost all cities. "It's deafening," one resident said via Twitter, AFP reported.

Then what happen?

As stated by the head of security, Abbas Ibrahim, this happened because there were two large explosions that occurred simultaneously. The explosion originated from explosives that were confiscated years ago and stored in the city harbor.

"It seems that there is a warehouse filled with material that was confiscated years ago, and it seems that it is very explosive material," said the senior security official.

However, he said a special investigation would still be conducted.

The same thing also explained Prime Minister Hassan Diab. He said the explosion occurred in the ammunition warehouse which has existed since six years, stored from 2014.

He also vowed to hold him accountable. "Those responsible for this disaster will pay the price," he said in a speech on local television.

Diab declared Wednesday (5/8/2020) as the national joining day. He also asked the international community to help Lebanon in the post-disaster response.

"I send an urgent appeal to all countries that are friends and brothers and love Lebanon, to stand by us and help us, treat this deep wound," he said.
